TEEN DRIVING INSTRUCTION IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA

 

1. Complete Online Driver’s Education

Before you can obtain your driver’s permit the first step to getting your license is to take the online driver’s education course →

2. Pass DMV Written Test

Take the written exam at the DMV to obtain a driver’s permit, which is required for behind-the-wheel lessons.

3. Schedule Behind-the-Wheel Lessons

Schedule and complete 6 hours (3 lessons) behind-the-wheel with our state-licensed driving school before your permit expiration date. You are allowed to take the behind-the-wheel DMV license test after 6 months of the permit issue date.

  • The first step to getting your license is to pass an online driver’s education course.

    Completion of a California Drivers Ed course is required for any teen under 17 ½ prior to obtaining your learner’s permit. Our state-licensed online driver’s education courses can be completed at your own pace.

    Once you complete online driver’s ed, you may apply for a learner’s permit from your local DMV starting at the age of 15 ½.

    Once you pass your written DMV exam to receive your permit, you are then required to complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a state-licensed driving school.

    You can call or email us to schedule your required 3 behind-the-wheel lessons (2 hours each). We offer lessons all 7 days of the week.

    Our instructors work one-on-one with students to assess their skill level and progress.

    We also offer a Busy Parent Package for any parents who simply do not have the time to practice with their teenager.

Sterling programs prepare teens for today’s busy roadways by developing safe-driving habits and decision-making skills. Throughout the teen driving courses, teen drivers will learn basic driving fundamentals and defensive driving skills. Feedback is provided to both students and parents after every lesson. Sterling has a wide variety of programs and packages to choose from in order to meet individual student needs.

Driving Skills Taught at Sterling

  • City Driving — Speed control, lane changes, turning, braking, passing, school crossings, one-way roads, steering, signaling, anticipation and scanning Traffic control devices – understanding signs, lights and road markings.

  • Parking — Standard and parallel parking.

  • Highway Driving — Entering, exiting, lane positioning, following distance, speed control, and passing.

  • Mountain Roads — Navigating various narrow road situations common in Santa Cruz Mountains such as Empire Grade Rd and Hw 9
